ABOUT A FILM:
The fate of a young man (Bogusław Linda) depends on whether or not he will catch a train that is just about to leave the platform. The director, presenting different scenarios, analyzes the role of blind chance in shaping a person’s life. The film’s backdrop is the history of Communist Poland from the end of WWII to the beginning of the 80s and the birth of Solidarity. It is one of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s most important films.
PRESS ON FILM:
A sly and incisive political commentary in the guise of a metaphysical examination of the state of humanity in a state-controlled universe (Dan Jardine, Cinemania)
The direction is surprisingly vigorous for a film which deals with ideas considered in half-light, but the three-part structure is confusing, and it is possible to see the film both as a linear construction and as three alternative stories. (TV Guide's Movie Guide)
