In 1971, 800 people occupied abandoned barracks in Copenhagen, creating Christiania – an experimental society based on hippie anarchist culture and the principles of consensus democracy. The film documents one of the most unique social undertakings of the last 50 years, combining rich archival materials with interviews from residents. It tells the story of idealism and challenges, from attempts to control Pusher Street and fights with biker gangs to attacks on the “free town.” Vivid accounts from residents show the transformations of Christiania, its independent community, and the ongoing conflict between ideals and everyday reality, raising questions about consensus democracy, autonomy, and the sense of belonging.
