A search for identity, the reclamation of an erased past, and a form of artistic resistance—“Notes from the Underground” serves as a living archive of the rights and experiences of generations for whom hip-hop became a tool for survival and a means of crafting their own history.
For four decades, hip-hop in Cape Town has been more than just music. For successive generations, it has served as a way to explore their roots, reclaim a suppressed history, and forge an identity in the shadow of colonialism and apartheid. "Notes from the Underground" takes viewers through various neighborhoods of the city, sharing the personal stories of individuals for whom hip-hop has become a tool for self-discovery, resistance, and community building.
The film functions as a living archive of the voices and memories of different generations, presenting hip-hop as a means of survival, a way to reclaim one’s own history, and a method for constructing identity. It is, at once, a collective act of remembrance, resistance, and cultural continuity.
