„Królowa bawełny” to opowieść o dojrzewaniu, międzypokoleniowym dziedzictwie i kobiecej sprawczości, a także o prawie do decydowania o ziemi i przyszłości własnej społeczności.
Caught between the memory of her ancestors and the promise of progress, between the good of the community and the pursuit of profit. As she comes of age, Nafisa must find her own voice and decide what kind of future she wants to fight for.
In a Sudanese village where life has been tied to cotton farming for generations, a teenage girl named Nafisa is growing up. Her grandmother, Al-Sit, is held in high esteem by the whole community and tells her granddaughter stories of the struggle against the British colonisers. The memory of the past is put to the test when Nadir – a young, overseas-educated businessman – arrives in the village and proposes modernising the crops using genetically modified seeds. However, the promise of higher yields carries the risk of making local farmers dependent on large corporations - postcolonial freedom, which has simply turned out to be a different set of chains: exploitation.
Nafisa finds herself at the heart of a conflict where tradition, economic interests and differing visions of the future clash. Faced with decisions that could change the fate of an entire community, she must discover her own strength and decide what is worth fighting for. “Cotton Queen” is a story of coming of age, intergenerational legacy and female agency, as well as the right to make decisions about the land and the future of one’s own community.
“Cotton Queen” is the first feature-length film ever made by a Sudanese woman.
